ASIL Private International Law Interest Group
ASIL Interest Groups are organized by ASIL members for focused activity
in particular fields of international law. Membership in ASIL is
required for membership in ASIL Interest Groups.
The Private International Law Interest Group was formed for the
purpose of exploring the relationship between public and private
international law, under the general thesis that they exert reciprocal
influence. This exploration involves making developments in the
field more readily accessible to members and the general public,
providing opportunities for members to have input on the processes
and institutions through which private international law is developed,
assisting in the establishment of mechanisms by which members, legal
practitioners, the judiciary, and internationally active enterprises
may gain knowledge of relevant issues of private international law,
providing a forum for a critical examination of private international
law and its processes, and (through a combination of the aforementioned
goals) improving the international law that is the output of those
processes. Recent focuses have included the substantial developments
in the field of the unification of the substantive private law rules
governing international transactions. By sponsoring panels at the
ASIL Annual Meeting, the Group has provided a forum for a critical
examination of private international law rules and processes and
made developments in the field more readily accessible to the public
and to ASIL members. The group looks to form alliances with like-minded
international organizations, as well as to organize a conference
on a subject of private international law, and plans to organize
an annual social event for members.
