The Importance of Navigational Rights and Freedoms in International Law [1]

Date:
Thursday, October 31, 2019 - 9:00am to 9:45am
Description:

Invitation On the occasion of the International Law Week Please join the Permanent Mission of Colombia to the United Nations and the American Society of International Law At a Panel Discussion on "The Importance of Navigational Rights and Freedoms in International Law" The freedom of navigation has long been of concern to scholars and practitioners of international politics. Increasing tensions around the world have recently propelled the issue to the forefront of global foreign and security policy making. Yet, despite the frequent invocation of threats to the ‘freedom of navigation’, or to concepts such as ‘innocent passage’ or ‘transit passage’, the substance of this matter remains ambiguous and the nature of the threatened order unclear. Starting from the original provisions on navigational regimes in international law, this panel will analyze the meanings that officials, courts, tribunals and academics have been attributing to the freedom of navigation and related rights and contextualize them in the evolving debate about these topics. After the presentations, the floor will be open for the audience to engage in an interactive exchange with the Panelists. Panelists: Prof. Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Secretary-General, The Hague Academy for International Law Prof. Sean Murphy, President of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) and Member of the International Law Commission Prof. Concepción Escobar Hernández, Chair in Public International Law (UNED) and Member of the International Law Commission Please RSVP here [2].
