Renaissance of the Advisory Opinion in International Courts and Tribunals [1]

This event will bring together scholars, practitioners, and members of the international law community to discuss the recent swell of advisory opinion proceedings in various international tribunals and what this spells for future development of the international legal order. The event will feature a moderated dialogue between public international law
experts and follow with an audience Q&A and group discussion. The event will analyze the history of advisory opinion requests and proceedings in international fora and their recent upsurge, including in the climate change context at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and International Court of Justice, and in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Participants will consider the current efficacy of the advisory opinion mechanism and its potential to assist in the development and harmonization of international law.
