EU Commission Opposes US Sanctions on Nord Stream 2 Citing International Law [1]
The European Union Commission has responded [3] to U.S. targeted sanctions on an oil pipeline being built from Russia to Germany, known as Nord Stream 2. The sanctions were provided for in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 [4]. The Commission response, among other things, states that "[t]he EU does not recognise the extraterritorial application of US sanctions, which it considers to be contrary to international law." The EU further commented that "the EU opposes the imposition of sanctions against EU companies conducting legitimate business in accordance with EU law" and that any such pipelines must "be operated in line with EU law." Nord Stream 2 is owned by Nord Stream 2 AG, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom, a Russian state company. Nord Stream 2 AG will operate the pipeline once it is completed.
