General Assembly Adopts Resolution Declaring Crimea Referendum Invalid (March 27, 2014) [1]
On March 27, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution [3] declaring that the Crimean referendum that led to the peninsula’s annexation by Russia has “no validity” and “cannot form the basis of any alteration of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.” The resolution also called on other States “to desist and refrain from actions aimed at the partial or total disruption of the national unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine” and urges States “not to recognize any alteration of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. . . on the basis of the above-mentioned referendum.” According to the press release [4], the resolution was adopted by a vote of 100 states in favor and 11 against, with 58 abstentions.
