International Court of Justice Affirms Cambodian Sovereignty Over Whole Territory of the Promontory of Preah Vihear (November 11, 2013) [1]
The International Court of Justice issued a Judgment [3] in the case concerning the Request for Interpretation of the Judgment of 15 June 1962 in the Case concerning the Temple of Preah Vihear (Cambodia v. Thailand). According to the press release [4], the ICJ declared unanimously “that the Judgment of 15 June 1962 decided that Cambodia had sovereignty over the whole territory of the promontory of Preah Vihear, as defined in paragraph 98 of the present Judgment, and that, in consequence, Thailand was under an obligation to withdraw from that territory the Thai military or police forces, or other guards or keepers, that were stationed there.” The Temple of Preah Vihear is situated on a promontory of the same name in the Dangrek range of mountains, which generally constitutes the boundary between Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the north. The Judgment comes in the wake of several decades of dispute between the two countries regarding the territory surrounding the temple, including a number of armed incidents which had prompted the United Nations Security Council to call for a permanent ceasefire in February 2011.
