UN Human Rights Council Appoints Independent Expert on Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (June 30, 2016) [1]
On June 30, 2016, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution [3] on “Protection Against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.” The resolution appoints for a three-year term an Independent Expert tasked with raising awareness, assessing best practices and gaps in existing policies, and supporting national efforts against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil jointly introduced the resolution and referenced the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ May 4, 2015, report [4] on the issue. According to the press release [5], Saudi Arabia requested a no-action motion, which was rejected, and “Mexico and Panama spoke against the motion, while Bangladesh and Nigeria on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, with the exception of Albania, spoke in favour of the motion.” The resolution was adopted by a vote of 23 in favor and 18 against, with 6 abstentions.
