International Development Law

The International Development Law Interest Group seeks to provide two basic functions. One is providing a learning forum for lawyers who aspire to have a career in the field of development and/or with the international financial institutions (IFI) is to as well as to understand how these organizations engage in large scale international public and private commercial transactions. In this setting, experienced IFI lawyers could help law students learn about the complex legal structures that underpin IFIs and what it takes to work as a lawyer within the organization or in ways that can help the organizations better achieve their missions.
The second role is to provide a discussion forum in which ASIL members can discuss international laws and policies that apply to or affect IFIs in a neutral setting. There is a rich array of challenging legal issues that arise within the public and private international law roles of IFIs. Moreover, there are operational questions such as the role of IFIs in furthering international and domestic law, in helping the international community deal with complex challenges like climate change, poverty and inequality and in promoting sustainable economic growth and human, environmental and social rights.
