The Lieber Society serves as ASIL's focal point for the study, consideration, and dissemination of the law of armed conflict or international humanitarian law (IHL). As a group, we aim to facilitate discussions concerning current armed conflicts and emerging topics in IHL, as well as the historical roots and development of the international rules governing armed conflicts. The diverse expertise and global affiliations of our members are a core strength of our society, enabling us to provide rich, nuanced, and multifaceted insights and interventions. Our primary activities include:

1. Facilitating dialogue by bringing together academics and governmental and non-governmental practitioners, civilian and military, from many countries, by organizing online webinars, in-person events (including panels at the ASIL Annual Meetings), organizing or co-sponsoring symposia, and by the informal sharing and critiquing of ideas, research and works-in-progress.
2. Supporting research excellence in IHL/LOAC through three annual awards: the Francis Lieber Prizes, presented to the authors of exceptional books and articles in the field, and the Richard Baxter Military Prize for exceptional writing that enhances understanding of the law of war by a person serving in the regular or reserve armed forces of any nation, as well as veterans and civilian employees of armed forces or defense agencies.
