Creating Responsible International Lawyers: Do We Have an Obligation to Push our Students outside their Comfort Zones?
This session will argue that the job of an international law professor is not only to teach students about international law but also to encourage them to think carefully about their social role and responsibilities as international lawyers. In order to do this, the professor must create opportunities for students to explore the potentially complicated interactions between their responsibilities to their clients, their responsibilities as members of their own society and the global community, and the social, political, economic, environmental and cultural impacts of their work as international lawyers. This should challenge students to think critically -- and ideally in new ways about their own views-- on these issues.
