International Law & Social Science
In both international law and the American Society of International Law, there is a long and distinguished history of interdisciplinary scholarship connecting social science theories and methods to the practice of law. The organized interest section on International Law and Social Science is designed to bring together analysts employing a range of empirical methods, qualitative and quantitative, to understand the dynamics of international law and international institutions. Legal scholars who have long engaged in “law-and” analyses drawing on the social sciences have in recent years enriched traditional doctrinal analysis with cutting-edge approaches from the social sciences, which also inform the work of legal policy-makers. Social scientists, meanwhile, have increasingly incorporated legal factors into their analyses, often reaching across disciplinary boundaries to legal experts. This section will provide a home for ASIL members who draw upon and contribute to the social sciences and serve as a platform for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations among those with legal and social science expertise.
