On July 10, 2017, an Arbitral Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration issued its Award on Compensation in the matter of the Arctic Sunrise arbitration between Russia and the Netherlands, ordering Russia to pay €5.4 million in damages to the. In 2015, the Tribunal had issued its Award on the Merits, finding Russia had breached its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea by boarding the Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, without the Netherland’s consent and detaining the environmental activists on board (the Arctic 30). According to the press release, in its Award on Compensation, the Tribunal found that the Netherlands is entitled to compensation for the physical damage to the Arctic Sunrise and the costs necessary to prepare it for the return trip to the Netherlands; the non-material damage to the Arctic 30 that Russia wrongfully arrested and detained; as well as the costs the Netherlands incurred due to measures Russia took against the Arctic 30, “including the costs of bail paid as security for their release from custody, expenses incurred during their detention in the Russian Federation, and costs in respect of the persons detained between their release from prison and their departure from the Russian Federation.”
