ASIL Task Force Report Launch: Recommendations for U.S. Engagement with the International Criminal Court

For the past 18 months, an ASIL-convened independent Task Force has been developing recommendations on how the United States might engage pragmatically with the International Criminal Court. During that time, the Court has opened investigations in the situations in Afghanistan and Palestine, the U.S. Government has imposed and withdrawn sanctions on the ICC Prosecutor and staff, ICC states parties commissioned their own Independent Expert Review of the Court, and a new ICC Prosecutor has been elected. ASIL President Catherine Amirfar and the co-chairs of the Task Force, Todd Buchwald and Beth Van Schaack, discuss the Task Force’s report, and its recommendations on what pragmatic engagement by the United States with the Court looks like against this changing landscape.

Speakers:

  • Catherine Amirfar (Moderator), ASIL President, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
  • Todd Buchwald, Task Force co-chair, former Ambassador, Office of Global Criminal Justice, U.S. Department of State
  • Beth Van Schaack, Task Force co-chair, Stanford Law School
