The Cultural Heritage and the Arts Interest Group (CHAIG) invites ASIL members and those interested to an online meeting with Professor Alexandra Xanthaki. Our distinguished guest is Professor of Laws at Brunel University London, United Kingdom, and leading international expert on cultural rights. Since 2021 she has served as the UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. This mandate was established in 2009, as one of the special procedures of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), in order to give greater visibility to cultural rights in the human rights system, and to foster a better understanding of the severity of their violations, and of the opportunity of their realization for all. The Special Rapporteur reports annually both to the HRC, and to the General Assembly. Learn more here.
The webinar will address the issues of realizing cultural human rights in the contemporary international order. Professor Xanthaki will outline the objectives of her mandate, including the main areas of her forthcoming thematic reports. Secondly, she will address current topical discussions where a cultural rights approach has been sidestepped. She will also refer to the issue of the protection of cultural human rights in the context of armed conflicts. Thirdly, key issues related to freedom of expression, including artistic and scientific expression, for the protection and realization of cultural human rights will be discussed. Q&A will follow.
